Learn To Fly

I'm a flight instructor. I teach people how to fly airplanes. I'm based out of the Hilo International Airport, in Hilo, Hawai'i.

The standard beginner's license is the Private Pilot license. This certificate allows you to take passengers in small airplanes.

There are further certificates and ratings that you can get as you gain experience. I can help you with your Instrument Rating and your Commercial Pilot certificate.

I have the required 14CFR 61.195 experience to instruct first-time Flight Instructor students.

How long does it take?

Most pilots require 60-70 hours of flight time to complete their training.

I'm a pretty efficient instructor. Most of my students take their checkride after around 50 hours of flight time.

Fly at least once a week: some simple lessons of around an hour, and some lessons are monster cross-country flights of around three hours. With one lesson a week, flight training is usually complete after seven to eight months.

How much does it cost?

Terry Way

Most of the flight time will be with an instructor. The instructor and the airplane costs $180 an hour. The rest of the flight time is solo. The airplane alone costs $120 an hour.

You should expect to budget around $300 a week for about 7 to 8 months, if you'll be flying around once a week.

I can save you a lot of money. I consistently teach students to an excellent standard, in far less time than most “flight schools.” The airplane and instructor prices are cheaper than any other flight school in the state: mostly because I'm not paying for air-conditioned offices complete with staff. My overhead is low.
