Paula Castillo passes her Private Pilot checkride

Sunday, February 7, 2010

Paula is the first Civil Air Patrol cadet that I've taught through to the checkride. She's already on to bigger and better things: she has the two required nominations (from Senator Akaka and Congresswoman Mazie Hirono) to apply for the U.S. Naval Academy.

She had asked me to write a recommendation for her; I see no reason I can't just quote it verbatim:

It has been a privilege to work with Paulina Castillo in not one, but two separate roles. As Deputy Commander of the Civil Air Patrol, Hilo Squadron, I have watched her grow as a Civil Air Patrol cadet. I've watched her work with and lead other cadets, I've seen her fierce desire to excel, and I've seen her strong patriotism. It has been an honor to mentor her.

Through the Civil Air Patrol, I've also had an opportunity to teach Paula how to fly an airplane. As I write this, she has logged 36.5 hours of dual instruction and about 20 hours solo.

Not everyone is capable of being a pilot. Paula clearly is. The simple and necessary challenge of flying solo requires a large reserve of self-confidence. Paula seems to be completely fearless, yet respectful of the risks. Good qualities in a pilot; good qualities in a student; good qualities in a human being.

In short: I sincerely recommend Paulina Castillo as an excellent candidate for entrance to the U.S. Service Academies.

Congratulations, Paula!
